In Cagayan de Oro

I am now sitting inside a small room in Cagayan de Oro City, visiting my little blogs that have been neglected for so long. I have been busy with things that may turn out to be the best thing that I have ever done in my life. Outwardly, I am planting lakatan bananas but the inner journey has been an absolute adventure which has taken me to places I never dreamed of being.

Cagayan de Oro City is a bustling city, trying to become what it should not. I liked the old city where everyone knew everyone and you could take a stroll and still breathe some fresh air. These days the city is populated by hawkers of fruits and ready-to-wear articles, used shoes that just beg you to step on them, being the dominant feature of the sidewalks of Divisoria.

I should get me another camera and take my pictures of the flowers that so valiantly strive to exist in a polluted world.

Flowers in Cebu

I was trying to get some business going with cut flowers and I thought Cebu would be a good place to source them from. I did get some good mums but, these were not the kinds that the flower shops in Dumaguete wanted which means that I have to scratch off Cebu as a source of mums and try somewhere else if I want to do this flower business. I was told that the really nice mums which cost much more than the mums I was buying came from Davao but I don't think that I have the stamina to go that far for flowers.

Anyway, here's Cagayan de Oro City with another one: Cagayan de Oro City. My Cebu City site has made pr1, surprise, surprise. Dumaguete is still in the boondocks as far as Google goes but Dumaguete has made some headway. Check out: Jai Alexander.

Like a machine gun

I am gong rapid-fire, like a machine gun. I blaze away on my keyboard even if my fingers are tired and want to rest. There is no rest for me today. I am blazing away and this is the way that I like it. am I some robot that bangs away on my keyboard, my mind racing faster than my fingers and not stopping, never pausing except to load another page?

The Tricky Mind

the mind is tricky, everyone has been a victim of its pranks at one time or another. I have been a dupe for my mind for a long time. No matter what I do and no matter how hard I try, I am unable to master my mind. It must be laughing at my puny efforts. The things is that I am subject to the moods or the feelings that my mind puts me into. It is like I have absolutely have no control over it and it feels like it is controlling me and the way I feel and my actions are dictated by it. I cannot help but think that this must be what they mean by predestination. It might be that my soul is hard-wired so much that I am unable to do any re-programming at all. I have read self-help books and they preach the same thing in one form or another. They say the same aphorisms, that you can control your life and your destiny. What they do not talk about is your mind and how tricky it is.

I had been distressed lately, with my thoughts turning my mind upside down bringing my world with it. The dreams I had banked on turned to nightmares that seemed to bring my mind to hellish confusion. This happens very often and I am beginning to get tired of it. I need to take stock of myself and exorcise these demons that plague me. I had not meditated for a long time and I had somehow forgotten how it is to meditate. Anyway, my sitting in meditation had become quite automatic and I had begun to doubt its efficacy. If I meditated and my life is still topsy-turvy, what good is it, meditation? Clearly something was wrong and I needed to find the answer fast. I was beginning to lose it, to be in a rut, like a hamster on a spinning wheel.

Then I watched "My Brilliant Brain" on the Natinal Geographic Channel". The topic was people who turned into savants after a trauma, an accident, something mentally or physically traumatic which threatened life and limb as well as brain. It was pointed out that there is a battle going on in our brains between the left side and the right side. Left was the seat of logic and the right was in charge of creativity. Damage to the left brain caused the right to compensate and caused the savant syndrome. It sounds interesting and logical. I sat in meditation again and allowed my mind to seek its balance. It worked!

It is wearing me out, this business with trying to get vhosts to work. I did the examples that they gave and nothing works. So, I have to content myself with having only one server. It would have been cool if I could get vhosts to work so I can have two or more domains on my server. I thought it would be a good thing to ask for help from the Apache mailing lists and I looked up the list for support. Right off, on the first page I encounter an article on how to ask smart questions. This is a contradiction in terms. A mailing list should involve newbies who need help. It is understandable that he will be a little stupid with the questions that he has since he is totally or close to being totally ignorant of the topic at hand. If he had smart questions he would would be able to work out the logic of the answers and he would not be needing the mailing list at all. This totally blew me off as it showed me the attitude of the people who maintain these apache mailing lists.

I have had better luck with the Squeak mailing lists whose members jump in with suggestions and help you out with your problems. I do not know if this attitude of apache mailing list maintainers have to do with the dominance of apache in the webserver market. Sure, apache has more webservers running than any other competing ones. I wonder if Lighttpd is more friendly.

Wilting flowers

The flowers of my mind are beginning to wilt. They usually do when I am not in good shape and I certainly have been battered by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. I want to scream and shout, to rage against the darkness of the night in my soul. The flowers of my mind need the light of the sun to nurture them and keep them strong and healthy. These days I have been living in gloom and doom seems to dog my footsteps. I will not let my mind's flowers wilt. They will bloom again even in the darkest gloom, the sun will shine again. In every life there are always times when the sun does not shine. I should think about this. Even in the North Pole, there is darkness that seems eternal when the sun does not shine for months. Life survives even in that darkness.

I feel down

I feel down, close to being depressed. I feel constriction in my chest, like a heavy weight is pressing down on me. I feel as though I am in a deep hole where it is damp and dark and gloomy and I am all alone with my thoughts that berate me and plague me with questions I have no answers to. This is how it goes with me, I get stopped, roadblocked, frozen and immobile while my thoughts race about me; thoughts of despair and betrayal and being inutile swamp my consciousness that I crave for the sweet embrace of oblivion. This happens regularly as though any attempt on my part to do what I want, to be able to write my name in the sky, to say out loud that I am free are met with opposition so great that I am crushed and forced to accept that which enslaves me, and keeps me down on the ground eating the dust and cursing my fate.

It appears to me that I do the same thing over and over again, that I am doing something which does not seem to make too much difference to my life and to life in general. They say that life is precious and that it is short. I think it is long enough when nothing seems to be happening. I have learned that life does not really conform to our ideas of how it must be. There are roadblocks everywhere and we have to go around them or go over them. Life does not make it easy for all of us. Even those who seem to have it easy are not really having it easy at all. Remember Richard Corey? He had a different set of problems which eventually led him to blow his brains out. The beautiful people have other types of problems than people like me.

There are some basic things that run through every life though, I think. And that is the pursuit of happiness. Everyone wants to be happy and this is pursued by everyone. A bit of javascript

Here I am once again, trying to make sense of this thing called the Internet. Today, like all days when I am at home, I checked my emails and one was offering 10,000 visitors for doing very little at all. There was nothing else that engaged my attention so I opened it and checked out the site. It seemed fairly simple, very much like the site that I joined last year, the name of which now escapes me. Basically what you need to do is to place a little javascript on your page and in return, your page will gain exposure in other people's pages. This was not traffic exchange which is a tedious way to get traffic. I am not saying that all traffic exchanges are the same. There are some which are better than others and many which give good traffic.

What do flowers mean to me?

There is something about flowers that catches my attention much more than leaves, stems, stalks, foliage, etc. They perform a function which is both vital and aesthetic. Bees, butterflies and sometimes visit them and interact with them in ways both delicate and sensitive. I saw a hummingbird visit a flower once, it wings flapping at I don't know how many thousand times per minute and it accurately and as though immobile but floating on air, targeted the flower and the nectar it was sipping. The flower could have collapsed under its weight if the hummingbird had alighted on it but they seemed a perfect combination, the flower and the hummingbird. One, giving food and sustenance and the other allowing pollination to occur.

That was the first time I ever saw a hummingbird. I thought they existed only as pictures on a book or visible only to experienced birdwatchers, but there it was, early in the morning, courting the flower and kissing it, as it were. I watched transfixed as though movement on my part would destroy a magical moment which they shared and I was privileged to have witnessed. That moment lasted less than I anticipated but the memory lives on and serves to remind me that there are things that seem to be of no consequence but happen nevertheles, without my intervention, without my permission, without me even needing to be being there.

Tea flowers

I have some tea plants that grow in some plots that I have. I got the original cuttings from Jessie who swears by its therapeutic properties. He says drinking tea from these plants worked wonders for people with ailments. Although I am a great believer in herbal medicine, I shy away from huge claims that border on the miraculous. Plants and herbs have therapeutic and medicinal properties as the Chinese and Indian sources inform us. These two cultures probably have the oldest, continuous traditions in herbal research and most of what we take for granted have been researched and studied thousands of years ago.

I planted a few cuttings that I got from Jessie and these have multiplied beyond my expectation. He told me that I could have a plantation of these in no time, if I wanted to. He was not exaggerating, to be sure. Lately, I have been taking the tea regularly and I must say that I have gotten used to having it instead of just drinking water. I cannot attribute anything miraculous to it although I do feel a little better in many ways. Going back to the tea plants, flowers have begun to show and these are very delicate white flowers which form a kind of pyramid. I do not know if they can be made into tea or if they make seeds for growing. There is just too many plants and cuttings are an easy way to propagate them.

Do we make our own destiny?

I have often wondered if I create my own destiny by the actions that I take. The actions that we take might seem a fairly straightforward concept. We do things and consequences occur. Why do we do the things that we do? Why do we do the same things over and over again? They say history repeats itself and very often we repeat the same mistakes again and again. Could it be that we do things that we think about and that what we think about repeat themselves all the time? Do we think the same thoughts even when we are not really aware we are thinking these thoughts? What spurs these thoughts that seem to dominate our consciousness?

New Things Are Always Happening

It might seem that nothing in our humdrum lives ever changes. We see the same people everyday, think the same thoughts, feel the same feelings. It is as if every day that dawns is a clone of the day before. The fact of the matter is that we live in our skins and our perceptions remain the same even when everything around us changes in wonderful ways. We are oblivious to the changes that constantly happen around us. A set of eggs have just hatched in a nest on a tree close to us and we are not aware that there is such a nest in that tree much less of those hatchlings. We see the tree everyday but it makes no impression on us until maybe some big branch falls because of the wind and rain. There are myriad things that happen around us and we take no notice of these events.

Our world is largely bounded by our skin and when we feel bad it is like the whole world around us does not exist except for that feeling of discomfort that completely commands our attention and we are riveted to that feeling to the exclusion of others. Everybody loves flowers and flowers are everywhere for everyone to enjoy. In the fields or on the sides of streets in Cagayan de Oro or Dumaguete or anywhere in the Philippines for that matter, you could find tiny flowers, shy, peeking from muddy soil. They can be very unobtrusive, calling no attention to themselves. But, on closer inspection, they mesmerize and hold the mind captive with their colors and intricate design. One is amazed at their delicate structure and their strength. No wonder flowers are compared to Solomon in all his glory. Some flowers shelter in the shade of a tall tree. They hang from branches and trunks seemingly gaining sustenance not from soil but from the air. These plants are prized for their color and delicateness as well as for their variety. People have domesticated them and have made it their life-long avocation to culture and nurture them and to create new varieties. I am no expert in flowers. I like flowers where they are, on the earth or in the air permeating nature with their essence and beauty.

I think of their existence and I remember my own. How very similar we are, our lives beyond our control. Any moment a pick or a shovel or even a bulldozer can come and rip their roots from the soil much like an asteroid can come smashing its way into where I am or, a typhoon wreaking havoc or a volcano exploding its bowels in spectacles of ash or lava flows. The flower and I are not so different. I know nothing of my own existence or of a higher purpose. I seek not to order the world or to dominate it, and I suspect I am here on this earth simply to enjoy it.

Flowers everywhere

I woke up early this morning and went to my tea plants to see how they were doing. There were a number of them that seemed to have too much sun and were yellowed and small and seemed distressed. But all was not stress and distress for these tea plants for there were flowers on a few of them. Glorious flowers, delicate white flowers that seemed to form a tiara at the top of the plant. Flowers are always fun to look at and I often wonder and get lost in the wonder of such beautiful, exquisite beings that populate my small plot of tea plants. Do they turn into seeds perhaps when their glory days are over and germinate into small tea plants? I never found out because there are just too many of them to examine.

I suppose one day I shall take a closer look and find out if they do grow to become tea plants. They must have a purpose other than just showing off their delicate petals to the world. I have another plot where the sun has a hard time penetrating. It is sheltered by the overhang of a bay window on the big bedroom. I have to stoop to get to the tea plants and I notice that the leaves were bigger and greener than those plants that are exposed to direct sunlight.I surmise that they somehow don't care too much for too much sun.

The tea plants on the shaded place do have a nemesis, a number of caterpillars have made it their feeding ground and I counted three of them that have grown fat and big. I think that they will turn into pupa in a chrysalis or a cocoon, whichever they may turn out to be.

I found some flowers at a new site: Ching's World. Although it really is not abut flowers at all, it has some pretty ones which I like. The website has information on the Philippines and its cities notably Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete and Cebu. It aims to become a primary source of information on the Philippines and its many tourist attractions.

One of the new craze in Cagayan de Oro is white water rafting on its famed Cagayan River which snakes its way from Baungon to the City proper and providing some thrills for adventurous visitors.

Mind flowers

Our minds can be likened to a garden. We can have flowers or weeds in our minds and our lives reflect externally that which exists in our mind. There are many kinds of people and each one has a mental garden where all sorts of mental plants grow. This mental garden is often disregarded and taken as something which just is and cannot be changed. Nothing could be further from the truth for in reality, this mental garden can be cultivated and nurtured. One can grow colorful flowers with heavenly scents and fragrances or one can grow weeds and poison ivy which sting and hurt those around them.

Very often we hear about toxic people, people so negative that they poison the very air around them. They feel miserable and misery is the theme of their lives. Other people get affected by their aura or vibration and pretty soon feel depressed and miserable themselves. Where does all this negativity come from? I suspect that it comes from deep inside their beings and that the active part is their mind.

Life is dynamic. It is not static or pre-determined. We might have tendencies or predispositions but these are merely potential and not irreversible. We can change who we are. Externally, this has been practiced by plastic surgeons. An extreme example is Michael Jackson, the so-called "king of pop". Born a black baby he grew to be a white man. Transsexuals are another example. These changes are merely external. The more important change that needs to be made is inside and the place to start is in the mind. One can start thinking good, positive thoughts. If one keeps this up one will end up with a mental garden of bright, beautiful flowers and their fragrance will be expressed externally.

Little Red Flowers

It is a tiny little plant with tiny little flowers. I don't know its name and I suspect it doesn't really care too much about that. It is not stingy with its blooms and many tiny bee-like insects visit the flowers daily so I suspect it must hold its own when it comes to attracting the insects.It must have enough sweet nectar to keep the little insects interested. The blooms do not last for very long but new ones show their tiny little buds as promised a replacement for those that have grown tired and weary. It is a beautiful march of life being renewed daily, like a prayer almost.

Tawa-tawa is a very common plant which grows everywhere. This plant deserves special mention because of its medicinal properties. Local tradition credits this plant with helping patients stricken with Denge Fever. While it does not fight the virus, it promotes the development of blood platelets and soften the effect of the virus which attacks the blood.

There is nothing much to say about this flower. I wish I did. It lives for just a while, for what purpose I cannot profess to know. The great poet Alfred Lord Tennyson once wrote:
Flower in the crannied wall
I pluck you out of the crannies
Hold you here, in my hand
Little flower--but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all
I should know what God and Man is

He ponders the profound questions of life, of man and God and, lost in the depths of his thought, he plucks the flower and kills it. I cannot help but wonder about the absurdity of it all, and the bitter irony of a man's quest for truth that kills and destroys without intending to. Was the little flower's demise collateral damage in the search for answers? Am I naive to entertain the notion that every man, woman and child has the right to a human life in this planet?

An ordinary flower

An ordinary flower on a small pot just minding its own business, unaware of world events, of Jihads and the clash of conflicting ideas that lead to further confrontations each one more violent than the preceding. They say that clash is the way to purification and well it may be. This flower leads a simple, humdrum, ordnary life.

It stands each day unstinting, unmindful of the quarrels of men, of dreams and schemes, of plots and manipulations, of cabbages and kings.

Unexpected bloom

This is a bloom no one really took care of. It was just hanging there doing nothing and asking for nothing. I started to give it rice water and I did it day after day consistently. One day after I came home from a trip, this greeted me. I don't know its name. I've been told it is Cattleya and it may well be that. This orchid has bloomed for me twice already which is more than anyone can ask for considering that I know nothing about its care.

They say a rose by any other name smells just as sweet and a flower no matter how small is always important. Wild flowers are of interest to me because they grow unobtrusively without anybody noticing and they may not be as important commercially than Carnations or Chrysanthemums or Tulips but the bees still need and appreciate them.
